Reborn Baby Dolls For Beginners
I’m sure that you have heard the term – reborn baby dolls. But, do you know what it means? In the simplest of explanations, this is a doll that has had a “rebirth” of sorts, turning a plain vinyl baby doll into a work of art that you may mistake for a living, breathing infant!
I first learned about reborn baby dolls through a friend らぶどーる. As I was visiting her one day, she had a crib in the living room – with an infant in it! My friend, who is in her 40’s, had recently seen the last of her children off to college. So, I was polite and quiet, being particularly quiet so as not to wake this child. Was I ever surprised to learn that this “child” that I was so careful not to awaken was a doll! Perfect in every way, that exceptional masterpiece was a nice awakening to the term reborn baby doll.
Simply put, a reborn baby doll is one that has been completely disassembled, cleaned, detailed and reassembled. Usually taking hours and a high level of skill, these dolls can look so much like an infant that some find it “spooky.” I definitely do not find them spooky, in fact I see them as beautiful and comforting.
There is quite a following among the better known crafts people. The better reborn baby dolls can be quite expensive, often reaching $5,000 – or more. But, you don’t have to spend that much to have one for yourself. And, if you’re a do-it-yourself type of person, there are reborn baby doll kits available if you would like to “get your hands dirty!” Since I’ve become a part of this hobby, I have seen some remarkable creations that were made by people just like you and me – passionate and determined to create a masterpiece.
